Transmission
For gear changes, the Banks team will use a 5-speed Liberty Transmission with an air (really a small bottle of CO2) shifter. This beefy transmission is rated for some 3,000 horsepower and will accept more than 3,500 lb-ft of torque. There's no shift pattern for the driver to sort through in the less than seven seconds that it takes to go through all 5 gears. A single button on the steering wheel allows the Dragster's driver to effect the 4 instant up-shifts that it takes to traverse the 1,320-foot quarter-mile at a touch of the right thumb.
All of the gears and sliders in this three-rail transmission are shot-peened for high-load capacity, surface-enhanced for uniform surface finish, and cryogenically treated to stabilize the molecular structure of the metal. Each of these metal treatments increases component durability and reliability.
A multi-disc Molinari clutch will be used for staging, and burnouts.
