Cylinder Head Development

The engine build team at Banks not only prepares all of the race engines for Banks projects, they work to constantly refine the parameters performance diesel cylinder head design formulas many of which will someday find their way into the Banks high-performance consumers parts of the future.

Many hours of meticulous hand porting and many more on the flow bench are put in to each set of racing heads at Banks. Valve lift, seat angle, as well as the number of  angle cuts on the valve head itself, are all critical to the kind of ultra performance that the heads for the race engines are expected to deliver.

In a diesel engine, where no fuel is carried by the incoming air charge, volume and swirl make all the difference.  You want the incoming air to really be "twisting" when it hits the combustion chamber. Valve spring strength and cam timing are other areas in the intake system that always come under very close scrutiny at Banks.  Nothing in the intake system is taken for granted or ever left out-of-the-box stock.  As tough as they are, even the OEM Duramax rocker arms and push rods are carefully checked and given a light "buffing" before they go into an engine.  The valve guides are designed in house and manufactured exclusively for Banks.

  • Intake port flow increased nearly 25 percent over factory specs
  • Exhaust port flow increased nearly 55 percent over factory specs
  • High intake swirl maintained in both cases
  • Banks-designed roller lifters (lighter and shorter vs. factory)
  • Banks-specified bronze lifter guide sleeves
  • Banks-specified CHE valve guides
